How The Mind Works - Steven Pinker
Usually i wouldn't share books that are not programming related. But i think i may have to make this an exception. This book is excellent and is a pretty easy read. So here is a quick synopsis:
MIT's Pinker, who received considerable acclaim for The Language Instinct (LJ 2/1/94), turns his attention to how the mind functions and how and why it evolved as it did. The author relies primarily on the computational theory of mind and the theory of the natural selection of replicators to explain how the mind perceives, reasons, interacts socially, experiences varied emotions, creates, and philosophizes. Drawing upon theory and research from a variety of disciplines (most notably cognitive science and evolutionary biology) and using the principle of "reverse-engineering," Pinker speculates on what the mind was designed to do and how it has evolved into a system of "psychological faculties or mental modules." His latest book is extraordinarily ambitious, often complex, occasionally tedious, frequently entertaining, and consistently challenging. Appropriate for academic and large public libraries.?Laurie Bartolini, MacMurray Coll. Lib., Jacksonville, Ill. It is really good ! We attack any new problem we encounter with techniques we already know, and try small modifications if difficulties turn up. Bram Cohen - Bit Torrent Creator |

Not really what it's purpose is, and i don't think this book contains that kind of information. "Character is determined more by the lack of certain experiences than by those one has had." Well brain is a complicated subject in the eyes of people who aren't studying it. And I believe this book was written that we can learn how our own brain works. After reading the description posted by Back_track I think its unlikely that it is teaching us social manipulating. I'll take a look at it too.
